What is a Waste Free Lunch?

|
|
Packing a waste free lunch means that you have no waste to throw away when you have finished. Lunchboxes often includes cartons, plastic bottles, sandwich bags, yoghurt pots, crisp bags, biscuit and bar wrappers, dip containers etc. Multiply this with the number of lunches you eat in a year and you can start to see how much you are contributing to landfill. Pack a waste free lunch by reusing food wrappers, containers and bottles, buy in bulk and avoid ready packed convenience foods. A waste free lunch is not just for schools but for work, holiday clubs, snacks, picnics, daytrips and holidays too.

Other Tips
- Use leftovers from the day before, a lunchbox doesn't have to consist of sandwiches and yoghurt..
- Include a serving of both fruit and vegetables - comes in their own packaking.
- Rice cakes, oatcakes and ryvita are good snacks that don't need extra packaging to stay fresh and crispy.
- Make your own biscuits, mini quiches, sausage rolls etc and freeze.
- Buy big yoghurt pots and decant into small leak proof containers, much better for landfill than several small pots.
- DO NOT WASTE FOOD. Only pack as much lunch as you or your child will eat.

Waste Reducing waste however is something that is easier said than done when supermarkets are selling products that are carefully packaged with layers of plastic and cardboard packaging. Together we can use our purchasing power to choose products with no or less packaging.
